This is the first retrofit programme in the UK that is principally designed for contractors and is worth 16 Passive House Institute Credit Points. This advanced level course builds on technical knowledge gained from the Passivhaus Tradesperson course, however, we also welcome interested graduates from our Certified Passivhaus Designer and Bitesize courses. 

Understand the delivery of deep fabric retrofits and what is needed to ensure projects are a success on site.

Unlike most retrofit courses this is aimed specifically at contractors, but provides useful learning for those involved with design too – after all, greater cross over between design and construction is essential for successful projects.

Unforeseen changes are much more common in retrofit so require a different mindset: your team need to be able to problem solve and know who to contact for help. This course is aimed at providing you with the understanding and tools to achieve this.

Ultimately the aim is to prepare you to deliver EnerPHit and fabric first retrofits successfully, specifically aiming at:

• Understand the specific risks associated with retrofit.
• Understand common solutions and where to find help.
• Understand the quality required to ensure the building performs.
• Understand how to review design proposals, what to expect to be provided to the site team and determine the level of skill and management needed.
• Earn 16 PHI Credit Points upon completion.

Our experienced trainers will lead you through the various topics, show you typical problem areas for retrofit and best practice solutions.

A successful construction project starts with a well-thought-through design, so you will put this to the test with our case study building – with support, you will be responsible for applying the knowledge gained to the case study to give you a basic understanding of what goes into a retrofit design.

The real work starts as we move on site with the case study; were the decisions you made the right ones? Any retrofit is likely to have surprises creep in on site and this project is no different. We guide you through the process of the site work, pick up areas where the design may not be achievable and help the team to conclude what to do in such situations so you can better plan, cost and manage real projects.

• Teaching is through live webinars and starts at 9am. Sessions are 4 hours long, unless otherwise stated.
• There is a small amount of homework to complete between each session (approximately 1 hour) to consolidate your learning.
• This course is led by experts in retrofit world, all of whom have successfully delivered EnerPHit and other deep retrofit projects.
• Our operations team are available every working day for technical and administrative support.

The course is structured into a series of 3 modules to direct your learning through the essential aspects of Passivhaus:

Session 1 – Introduction to retrofit, whole building approaches, insulation and thermal bridging. One hour homework. 

Session 2 – Airtightness and wind tightness, moisture and building services. One hour homework. 

Session 3 – Review homework and then move on site with the case study.
